Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto
South-east of Sicily

Ragusa is placed in the south-eastern side of Sicily, nearly 100 Km away from Catania. Land full of art and sun, the youngest of the Sicilian provinces boasts the largest number of sites acknowledged as heritage of mankind by UNESCO…baroque art, uncontaminated nature, archaeological areas, traditions and unique flavours represent an historical and cultural reference of the utmost interest. Situated along a spur in the rock between two deep gorges, Ragusa is a city with two souls: Ragusa Superiore characterized by its modern aspect and Ibla, the most ancient core where sculptors and artists inserted – with unexpected harmony – baroque masterpieces into the classical medieval plant originating a urban landscape unique all around the world. The imposing Duomo di San Giorgio (Saint George’s Cathedral) with its magnificent late-baroque façade predominates while all around it is an interlacement of alleys, courtyards and short flights of steps in which letting oneself get lost and go together with hosts, dragons and masks supporting astonishing balconies and decorating the prospects of elegant mansions and splendid churches. In the outskirts: il Castello di Donnafugata (the Castle of Donnafugata), exemplary aristocratic residence tracing back to the second half of the 19th century, la Cava d’Ispica (the Quarry of Ispica), archeological site testifying the evolution of human settlements from the pre-historical era up to almost the present days; Marina di Ragusa, seaside-locality with long beaches of very fine golden sand and very good night-clubs.
