The property
This sunny estate is on the second largest of the Aeolian Islands, the volcanic island of Salina. Behind it stands the Dei Porri mountain, in front of it the two volcanic islands of Alicudi and Filicudi rise above the horizon. The house is surrounded by impressive flora and ocean scenery in a region famed for its culinary delights such as capers and Veltliner wines (including the dessert wine known as the “nectar of the gods”). The estate consists of two recently renovated adjacent complexes. The interior decoration, featuring exposed ceiling beams, wooden furniture from the region, local blue tiling and wrought iron, is kept deliberately simple and rural. In fact, guests will probably spend most of their time on the beautiful covered sun terraces, enjoying the simple but substantial country life, the breathtaking view of the volcanic mountains and the azure blue sea. Or perhaps relaxing by the old olive tree, the centrepiece of the courtyard with an open fireplace. Sun worshippers can relax on the bay of Pollara, which is easy to reach via a short path. This charming bay – how could it be any other way on the Aeolian Islands – is in the middle of an ancient volcano on a steep coastline. But there’s nothing to fear: the only thing likely to break out is enthusiasm for the impressive natural beauty of the scenery. Keen walkers can take paths through the volcanic landscape to the mountain of Fossa delle Felci – a nature reserve offering a breathtaking view of the peninsula and all the way to Mount Etna on the north coast, from a height of 982m.
