Go to galleryThe Ionian Riviera extends along the eastern coast of Sicily from Ganzirri, a well-known seaside village overlooking the straits of Messina, to lively Catania. A long and fascinating stretch of coastline rich in history, traditions and culture. A wide variety of sceneries from the splendid beaches of S. Teresa di Riva, Letojanni and Giardini Naxos, to the ancient hillside villages of Savoca, Castelmola and Forza d’Agrò and, of course, Taormina the undisputed queen of the Riviera. Beloved for centuries by artists and intellectuals from all over the world, Taormina, the Pearl of the Ionian commands breathtaking views over the sea, the ancient Greek Theatre and the delightful bay of Isola Bella and majestic Etna. Further to the south, between Acireale and Catania are the evocative fishing villages of S. Tecla, S. Maria La Scala, Aci Trezza and Aci Castello. Inland, east Sicily has still more to offer with the spectacular Gole dell’Alcantara, with its deep lava stone canyons. Guided tours on Mount Etna, the fiery giant, recently declared a UNESCO world heritage site are a must for all visitors.
